Exploring Volleyball Officiating Leadership

👋 Introduction: Growing as a Volleyball Official and Leader

Officiating volleyball is more than enforcing rules—it’s about mentorship, leadership, and community building.

Recently, I learned about a leadership opportunity within the Upstate Eight Conference. It wasn’t posted publicly—just shared by word of mouth. That moment made me reflect on my journey and my drive to continue evolving as a mentor and leader in the officiating world.

🏐 My Journey in the World of Volleyball Officiating

Since 2016, I’ve been a certified IHSA and USA Volleyball official. I’ve worked matches at the high school, collegiate, and club levels. In 2021, I had the honor of officiating the IHSA 4A Girls Volleyball State Finals.

That experience reminded me how important it is to stay composed, professional, and consistent, especially in high-pressure environments. Over the years, I’ve come to see officiating as a platform for growth and service to others.

Since 2016, I’ve been a certified IHSA and USA Volleyball official. I’ve officiated matches across high school, collegiate, and club levels. In 2021, I had the honor of officiating the IHSA 4A Girls Volleyball State Finals.

That experience reminded me that volleyball officiating leadership requires more than rule knowledge—it demands professionalism, focus, and the ability to lead by example. Over time, I’ve realized that officiating is a platform for mentorship, service, and community impact.

🧠 Mentorship and Developing New Officials

Mentoring junior officials has become one of the most fulfilling parts of my role. I’ve helped over 25 new referees in the Chicagoland area gain confidence, improve communication, and master the basics of the game.

With a background in education and leadership development, I’ve brought coaching techniques from the classroom into the gym. Helping others succeed is at the heart of being a great official.

📝 Writing the Game: Sharing Insight Through Referee Magazine

In 2025, I became a freelance contributor to Referee magazine. I’ve written three articles (publishing soon) that reflect my philosophy as an official and educator:

These pieces explore the mental, emotional, and procedural sides of officiating—and how leadership comes into play at every level.

These stories were born from my desire to raise the bar in the officiating community and empower others to lead with intention.

🔗 Seizing a Leadership Opportunity Through Community

The chance to serve in a leadership role in the Upstate Eight Conference came to me through a conversation, not an application. That’s how officiating communities often work—built on trust, connections, and consistency.

Once I heard about it, I reached out to express my interest and share my vision for supporting younger officials and strengthening the network around us.

🌍 A Vision for Regional Officiating Support

Looking ahead, I’d love to establish a regional association for officials from the Upstate Eight and MSL conferences. This could create a stronger foundation for training, support, and leadership growth.

Whether through writing, mentoring, or organizing, I’m committed to helping shape a more connected and confident officiating community.

Looking forward, I envision launching a regional volleyball officials association to bring together those in the Upstate Eight and MSL conferences.

This group would promote mentorship, shared training, and leadership development across all levels. Together, we can strengthen the pipeline of officials and support one another in our pursuit of excellence.

That’s what volleyball officiating leadership is all about—connection, growth, and purpose.

🎯 Final Thoughts

Officiating has given me the chance to grow, serve, and lead. Whether this new opportunity moves forward or not, I’ll continue developing officials, writing about the game, and supporting others in their journey.

That’s the essence of what it means to lead in volleyball officiating—bringing others up with you.

🔍 The Journey to Authenticity

🛤️ Introduction: Navigating the Job Market with Authenticity

When you’re navigating the job market with authenticity, it can feel like you’re constantly climbing uphill. 🎢 Despite strong preparation, tons of interviews, and a solid resume, the “right fit” often seems just out of reach.

So why does it feel like the closer we get to our goals, the further they drift? The answer is complex, but you’re not alone. In today’s job market, it’s not just about polished resumes or hard skills. It’s about resilience, self-awareness, and a healthy dose of humor. 😅

🏫 From Classroom to Corporate: A Purpose-Driven Pivot

My journey started in the classroom, teaching Special Education in District U-46. Over time, I transitioned into leadership and HR support roles, leading initiatives in:

  • 🧠 Staff training & development
  • 🧩 Inclusive onboarding
  • 🤝 Talent retention

At District 300, I improved student engagement by 80%, rolled out restorative practice training district-wide, and helped redesign onboarding programs to boost long-term retention.

💡 Pro Tip: Read more about my training philosophy on NuFlo.Ltd — my platform for HR innovation and professional development.

🏐 Shifting Gears: Sports Meets Strategy

In 2025, I shifted toward HR operations and sports management, especially in volleyball—a lifelong passion. Through my leadership at Progression Volleyball, I:

  • Increased program enrollment by 80%
  • Coordinated 20+ tournaments & leagues
  • Managed HR logistics for seasonal staff

🎯 These roles deepened my understanding of people operations, program management, and building inclusive, high-performing environments.

🚪 Job Market Realities: Overqualified or Misunderstood?

Since this transition, I’ve had dozens of interviews and just as many rejections. Often, the feedback sounds like:

“You’re a great fit, but we went with someone else.”

Or:

“We’re worried this role isn’t long-term enough for you.”

💭 I’ve always been transparent about growth, loyalty, and my desire to build with an organization. Maybe that honesty has cost me some roles. But I’d rather lead with authenticity than perform a version of myself that isn’t real. That’s what navigating the job market with authenticity is all about.

🌍 DEI, Privilege & Identity: Finding My Voice

Let’s talk real for a second. As a white male navigating a job market focused on diversity and inclusion, I’ve often asked myself:

“Where do I fit in DEI efforts if I don’t represent an underrepresented group?”

The truth? I don’t need to “prove” my diversity—I need to contribute meaningfully.

In my roles, I’ve:

  • Served on DEI and equity committees
  • Led inclusive hiring practices
  • Presented on behavioral equity at national conferences

💬 Diversity isn’t just about identity—it’s about action. And action is part of how I lead.

💻 Building Nu Flo: A Platform with Purpose

Nu Flo

Out of these experiences, I created Nu Flo—my HR and talent development platform. It’s where I help organizations:

  • Onboard more effectively 📝
  • Retain employees through growth 🌱
  • Build inclusive, sustainable cultures 🤝

I also freelance for Referee Magazine, contributing articles that blend my passion for volleyball with insights on compliance, leadership, and equity in sports.

🚀 What’s Next? Keeping the Vision Alive

I’m still applying. Still networking. Still growing.
But I’m also carving my path—by:

  • Expanding Nu Flo
  • Officiating volleyball 🏐
  • Supporting career changers and job seekers like myself

🎯 My goal? To align with a mission-driven organization that values growth, inclusion, and innovation.

If you’re building something special—or know someone who is—I’d love to chat.

🌀 Emotional Growth During Unemployment:

Emotional growth during unemployment can feel impossible, but what if this time in life is an invitation to rediscover yourself? 💡

Unemployment. 😔 It’s a heavy word — one that can stir up feelings of shame, uncertainty, and restlessness. But over the past few months, I’ve come to understand that this period of joblessness isn’t just about finding work — it’s about finding me 🧭. This moment has been a catalyst for deep emotional growth, not a dead-end.

That journey hasn’t been linear, and it certainly hasn’t been easy. But it’s teaching me to shift from being an emotional judge ⚖️ to an emotional scientist 🔬. And that’s where emotional growth during unemployment truly begins.

🌱 From Reaction to Reflection: Tracking Emotional Growth During Unemployment

Rather than labeling my emotions as good or bad, I’ve started observing them. When boredom creeps in — a sneaky, persistent visitor — I dig into it 🕵️. What’s underneath? Is it loneliness? 😔 Restlessness? 😣 Fear? 😨 Naming the emotion often lessens its grip.

This practice has helped me challenge the cognitive distortions I used to ride like Emotional Weather Waves 🌊, letting every breeze become a storm. Now, I pause and ask:

“What am I feeling? Why now? What triggered this?” 🧠💬

A huge part of this growth has come from attending both personal and couples therapy 🛋️. Therapy has helped me unpack emotional habits, explore the roots of my reactions, and build healthier patterns — both as an individual and in my relationship ❤️.

🛠️ Tools I’ve Used for Emotional Growth During Unemployment

I’ve also leaned into technology and simple routines to support my emotional well-being:

  • How We Feel App 📱 – This emotional tracking app has given me insight into my daily patterns and helped build a richer emotional vocabulary.
  • Walking my dogs 🐕 – Simple walks reset my nervous system and connect me with the present moment.
  • Fidgets 🌀 – Subtle tools that ground me during waves of restlessness.
  • The Serenity Prayer 🙏 – My anchor. I repeat it when uncertainty feels overwhelming:

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.” ✨

💛 Honoring Emotional Growth During Unemployment

Unemployment has taught me that vulnerability is strength — that feeling deeply isn’t a flaw, but a form of intelligence 🧠. I’ve stopped bottling up shame and started expressing truth without apology.

This chapter of my life is far from over. I don’t have everything figured out — and that’s okay. But every moment of emotional clarity is a win 🏆.

The Real Win: Finding a Company That Values Your Worth 💼🌟

There’s a powerful kind of joy that comes from connecting with a company that truly sees something empowering about finding a company that genuinely sees your value. I recently had the pleasure of going through the second-round interview process with Thriving Chicago, and it reminded me how important it is to find a company that values your worth.

Even if I don’t move forward, this experience gave me a renewed appreciation for transparent communication, mutual respect, and a strong workplace culture. 🙌

💰 1. They’re Willing to Negotiate Your Worth

Let’s start with the big one: compensation.

So often, job seekers get stuck accepting less than they deserve. But a company that’s open to negotiating your worth shows they’re invested in a real partnership, not just filling a seat.

In my interview with Thriving Chicago, I was impressed by their openness to discussing value from both sides. It’s rare—and refreshing.

👉 Use Glassdoor’s Salary Calculator to see your market value.

📈 2. Career Growth Isn’t Just a Buzzword

We all get bored when growth stalls. Promotions and skill-building opportunities aren’t perks—they’re essentials. And Thriving Chicago gets it.

They clearly outlined career growth opportunities, leadership development programs, and pathways for internal promotion.

📚 Why Career Growth Drives Employee Retention — Harvard Business Review

😌 3. You Can Be Yourself

This was the most personal takeaway: I never felt like I had to put on a show. My personality, experience, and authenticity were not only welcomed—they were celebrated.

In a world where professionalism sometimes means “blend in,” this felt like a breath of fresh air. 👏

Pro Tip: The only way to do greatt work is to love what you do. And to love what you do, you need to be valued and grow within your workplace – Steve Jobs

🤞 4. Here’s to What’s Next

Even if I don’t receive a third-round interview, I’m walking away feeling seen and respected. That alone makes this experience a win.

Each party brought their best. And that’s what matters. 🌟

🚀 Unlocking Professional Growth: The Transformation Trilogy

🌟 Foster. Lead. Optimize. 💡 Build a Workforce That Thrives.

At Nu Flo, LLC, we help businesses improve employee retention through seamless onboarding, professional development, and strategic HR partnerships, ensuring your team stays engaged and grows with you. We believe that continuous growth is the key to long-term success. 📈

As professionals, entrepreneurs, and lifelong learners, we are always seeking tools, strategies, and mindsets that empower us to evolve. Recently, I had the privilege of exploring The Transformation Trilogy—a powerful book series from Strategic Coach, which includes:

📘 Who Not How
📙 The Gap and the Gain
📗 10x Is Easier Than 2x

Each book offers a framework that reshapes perspectives, optimizes productivity, and encourages exponential growth. Let’s dive into the key takeaways! 🚀

📘 Who Not How: The Power of Delegation and Collaboration to Drive Employee Retention

The first book in the trilogy, Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy, challenges the traditional question, “How can I do this?” Instead, it asks, “Who can help me achieve this?” 🤝 This shift encourages leaders to focus on collaboration, leveraging others’ unique abilities instead of getting bogged down in the details.

At Nu Flo, we understand the importance of strategic partnerships and effective delegation. This book reinforced that surrounding ourselves with the right people—mentors, teammates, and collaborators—can fast-track our goals. Embracing the Who Not How mindset frees up mental energy for innovation and leadership, rather than executing every task ourselves. 💡

Want to dive deeper? Check out the Who Not How book for more insights.

📙 The Gap and the Gain: A Growth Mindset Shift for Professional Development

The Gap and the Gain offers a powerful perspective on measuring success. Rather than focusing on how far we are from our ultimate goal (the gap), it encourages us to reflect on how much progress we’ve already made (the gain). ✅ This shift nurtures motivation, gratitude, and resilience while reducing frustration and burnout. 🔥

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the work still ahead. Yet, celebrating small wins and acknowledging our growth helps maintain a more positive and sustainable approach to success.

At Nu Flo, we encourage professionals to track their gains regularly—whether through journaling, mentorship, or simple reflection—to stay motivated and appreciate the journey. 🚀

📗 10x Is Easier Than 2x: How to Set Ambitious Goals for Exponential Growth

10x Is Easier Than 2x presents a thought-provoking concept: aiming for exponential growth (10x) is often easier than incremental growth (2x). Why? Because 10x thinking forces us to rethink everything—our strategies, processes, and mindset—while 2x growth keeps us comfortably stagnant. 🔄

At Nu Flo, we encourage bold, ambitious goals. Rather than small, incremental adjustments, we challenge professionals to reimagine their entire approach. Whether scaling a business or optimizing efficiency, aiming for 10x ensures we’re not just improving—we’re transforming. 💥

Looking to achieve exponential growth? Check out 10x Is Easier Than 2x for insights on how to think bigger and achieve more.

🚀 Applying The Transformation Trilogy at Nu Flo

Each book in The Transformation Trilogy offers valuable insights for professional and personal growth. Here’s how we apply its principles:

Who Not How → Build stronger networks and partnerships that enhance efficiency.
The Gap and the Gain → Focus on progress, not perfection, to sustain motivation.
10x Is Easier Than 2x → Set ambitious, transformative goals for exponential impact.

At Nu Flo, LLC, our mission is to empower professionals to maximize their potential through continuous development. If you’re ready to elevate your career or business, these books are an excellent starting point. 🌱

Growth isn’t about working harder—it’s about working smarter, thinking bigger, and celebrating progress. 📈

Solving HR Challenges with Apps Script

Managing employee development and retention can be a complex task for HR departments. However, Nu Flo aims to simplify this by offering technology-driven solutions. Additionally, Nu Flo plans to expand its network by partnering with at least three HR companies. Google Apps Script supports this by offering flexible solutions that integrate easily into existing HR ecosystems. Whether it’s reviewing job applications or managing feedback, this tool ensures efficiency and data-driven decisions. 📈

Building a Network for Growth

As I transition into a full-time HR role, I aim to expand my professional network. 🤝 Attending HR conferences and workshops will help me stay current with industry trends. Google Apps Script enables me to continuously optimize HR processes. It allows me to share these innovations with the HR community, creating new opportunities for collaboration and growth. 🌍

At Nu Flo, we also aim to offer solutions that foster long-term professional development. By using Google Apps Script, we can automate and personalize training programs, helping businesses invest in their employees’ future. 💼

Conclusion: The Future of HR at Nu Flo

The Job Market and LinkedIn Recruiters✨

Navigating today’s job market can be a challenging experience, and LinkedIn recruiters are Navigating today’s job market during a career transition can be challenging. LinkedIn recruiters often act as a bridge between job seekers and career opportunities. However, in my experience, there is a recurring issue that needs to be addressed. It’s not just my perspective—it’s something many others have noticed too.

While I understand that recruiters are working hard to help candidates find the right job, the problem comes when an initial connection shifts into a pitch for paid services. This has happened to me often, and I know I’m not alone.

The Problem: Disconnect Between Networking and Resume Services 🤝

Let me share a recent experience.

I connected with someone on LinkedIn who seemed to understand the value of my background. Their message suggested there might be a job opportunity to discuss. Naturally, I was excited. I’m actively exploring roles in HR, sports management, and parks & recreation during my career transition. But instead of talking about opportunities, the conversation quickly turned into a sales pitch for a resume optimization service—which I didn’t need.

I understand that optimizing my resume is important. However, I already have free tools to help me with that. I don’t need to pay for something I can handle myself. As someone going through a career transition, my focus is on networking and connecting with people who want to have real conversations about career opportunities—not sell me something I don’t want.

I get it—recruiters need to make a living too. But as a job seeker feeling overwhelmed by the process, this felt like a missed chance for a real connection. The goal should be to discuss how my skills fit with potential roles—not just push me toward buying a resume service.

What Job Seekers Want During a Career Transition (And What They Don’t) 🔍

Let’s be clear: job seekers know the importance of having a polished resume. We get it. But we also have free resources to help us optimize our resumes. Platforms like LinkedIn, resume builders, and job boards offer great advice and templates. Here are some free resources I recommend:

  1. CanvaResume Templates on Canva
Free, customizable templates that help make your resume stand out.
  2. ZetyZety Resume Builder
Offers free templates and tips on writing a good resume. You can download a basic version for free.
  3. NovoresumeNovoresume Resume Builder
Simple-to-use tool with clean, professional designs.
  4. IndeedIndeed Resume Builder
A free tool to create, store, and manage your resume.
  5. LinkedInLinkedIn Resume Builder
Leverage your LinkedIn profile to create a professional resume quickly.

What we truly want are real connections with recruiters who know the hiring process is about more than just a resume. We want to talk about opportunities and how we could fit in a role—not feel like we’re being sold something we don’t need.

We want to show our skills and experiences in ways that benefit both us and the companies hiring. Networking and conversations about career goals should matter just as much as the resume.

The Bottom Line: Transparency and Connection Matter in Career Transitions 💡

This isn’t a critique of recruiters. I respect their work and am grateful for those who genuinely reach out about opportunities. However, there’s an important lesson here for both job seekers and recruiters.

Job seekers want clarity. We want to know if we’re having a conversation about a job opportunity or if we’re being offered a paid service. Recruiters should remember that LinkedIn is about building real relationships. It’s not just about a transaction—it’s about connection.

Recruiters, please be clear upfront: Let us know if you’re offering a service or if you want to explore job roles. Not everyone needs a resume optimization service, and sometimes, a simple connection can be just as valuable.

Bridging the Gap with Nu Flo, LLC 🤝

At Nu Flo, LLC, I believe in the power of genuine connection. My company is focused on fostering relationships that go beyond just landing a job—it’s about growth, mentorship, and creating opportunities for both job seekers and employers.

From the Classroom to Corporate: Crafting HR Solutions for Business Success with AI 🚀

I’m excited to share my journey from the educational world to corporate HR. Over the years, As I embrace the exciting change from the educational world to the corporate HR world, I’m fully investing my time and efforts to ensure my transition is impactful and effective. Over the years, I’ve developed skills that have allowed me to foster growth, nurture talent, and guide individuals in their development. Now, I’m channeling those experiences into HR, where I can make an even bigger impact—helping companies optimize talent retention, drive growth, and make data-driven decisions that support business success. 🌱

In this post, I’m thrilled to share a hands-on project that demonstrates my HR expertise, even without an official HR title. By designing an HR report system using Google Sheets, Google Forms, and Google Docs, I’m aligning my skill set with best practices in HR, while showcasing how I can foster growth, optimize talent retention, and support business operations in real-time.

Not only does this process reflect my passion for Nu Flo, LLC’s core values of Foster. Lead. Optimize. Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders, Retaining Today’s Talent, but it also acknowledges the growing influence of AI in the workplace, especially in corporate HR. AI-powered tools can help improve productivity, streamline operations, and enhance decision-making by providing data-driven insights and automating repetitive tasks. This approach enables companies to spend more time fostering growth while utilizing technology to improve overall efficiency. 🌟

Creating the HR Report 📊

The HR report I’ve designed serves as a powerful tool for reviewing critical data that influences business decisions, including:

  • Employee Retention 🔄
  • Promotion Readiness 🚀
  • Performance Metrics 📈
  • Skills & Development 💡
  • Team Collaboration & Engagement 🤝
  • Problem-Solving & Initiative 🧠
  • Leadership Potential 🦸‍♀️

Each category is designed to evaluate the essential factors that ensure employee success, optimize talent, and drive strategic decisions for business growth. This HR report serves as a foundation for making key decisions around promotion, employee retention, and career development—critical elements for any thriving organization. 🌟

Integrating Google Forms and Sheets 💻

To ensure the HR evaluation process is seamless and data-driven, I’ve integrated Google Forms to collect valuable feedback and performance data from team leads or evaluators. This data automatically populates into a Google Sheet, ensuring that everything is organized and easy to track—providing valuable insights for HR decision-makers.

While this system is already highly effective, the potential to integrate AI tools into the evaluation process is significant. AI-powered software can sift through large volumes of data to identify trends, optimize feedback, and even predict performance outcomes—helping companies make faster and more informed decisions. This is a prime example of how we can embrace technology to boost HR efficiency, drive productivity, and ensure talent retention. 🚀

Showcasing Progress: The Tester Report 📑

To demonstrate the effectiveness of this HR report system, I’ve included a tester report showcasing a fictional employee’s performance data. This report serves as an example of how the system works in practice, providing an in-depth evaluation of the employee’s progress in key areas like performance, leadership, collaboration, and growth. It’s the perfect tool for making data-driven decisions that optimize talent, ensure retention, and guide business strategy. 💡

The Bigger Picture: Transferable Skills 🔄

The creation and refinement of this HR report system have only reinforced how many of the skills I developed as an educator are transferable and directly applicable to HR. Whether it’s tracking performance, providing feedback, managing data, or making informed decisions, these skills are essential in guiding talent and fostering organizational success.

Moreover, as AI technology continues to evolve, its integration into HR processes will only increase. From automating routine tasks to offering valuable insights from data analytics, AI’s role in HR is becoming more vital in shaping the future of work. This project reflects not only my understanding of traditional HR principles but also my awareness of the benefits AI can bring to improve workplace productivity and decision-making.

This project is a perfect example of how I’m translating my experience from the education world into HR, helping businesses build strong, sustainable teams and optimize talent through data-driven decisions and AI integration. It aligns with Nu Flo, LLC’s mission to empower tomorrow’s leaders while retaining today’s talent, and demonstrates how I’m preparing for the future of HR while leveraging the best tools for success. 💪

By incorporating Google Sheets, Google Forms, and Google Docs, along with the potential integration of AI, this project not only helps streamline HR processes but also sets the foundation for more advanced data-driven solutions in talent management. If you want to see how HR can be optimized through technology, this approach is one I’m proud to showcase as I continue my journey into the world of Human Resources.

At River Valley Memorial Gardens, Nu Flo HR Solutions implemented tailored HR solutions to address their unique operational needs, with a focus on:

  • Employee Engagement 🤝
  • Continuous Learning 📚
  • Operational Efficiency and Workforce Planning 📊

Leveraging my expertise in training and development, we introduced leadership-driven strategies that streamlined processes and enhanced employee satisfaction. After implementing the CIMS platform, employee engagement rose by 15%, enabling staff to access critical information more quickly and accurately. 🚀

We also integrated Google Workplace to optimize communication and collaboration, creating a more productive and connected work environment. 🔗

Continuous Learning: Strengthening HR Expertise 🎓

At Nu Flo HR Solutions, continuous professional development is a priority. To stay ahead of HR trends, I engage in specialized training and compliance education. Recently, I attended the webcast “Diving Deeper into Affirmative Action and Federal Contractor Compliance: Key Insights & Critical Actions”, gaining valuable insights into OFCCP regulations and compliance strategies. 📜

Additionally, I’m set to attend the event “Leveraging Your Lean Experience for Breakthrough Career Growth” on February 19, 2025, hosted by the Lean Learning Center. This event will provide innovative strategies to optimize workforce management, further enhancing Nu Flo HR Solutions’ HR capabilities. 🔥

The Future of Nu Flo HR Solutions: Innovating HR Solutions 🌟

By blending hands-on experience with continuous professional development, Nu Flo HR Solutions is poised to redefine employee engagement and talent optimization. My background in special education, program development, and HR training ensures that we not only retain top talent but also foster a culture of continuous improvement and inclusion. 💡
