Moving Up in the World of Volleyball Officiating: My Journey to Junior National Certification

Moving up in the world of volleyball officiating has been an exciting challenge for me, and it requires dedication, continuous learning, and strategic planning. As I work toward reaching the Junior National level, I’ve come to realize that the journey involves refining my skills, seeking mentorship, and gaining experience at higher levels of competition. Here’s how I’ve been preparing for that next big step.

1. Build a Strong Officiating Resume

Experience is key to advancing in the officiating world. My goal has been to officiate at high school, regional, and collegiate levels to gain exposure and build credibility.

To strengthen my officiating background:

  • I’ve worked on higher-level matches, including USAV regional and national events, to challenge myself and gain valuable experience.
  • I’ve sought assignments that push my ability to manage the game under pressure.
  • I consistently seek feedback from assignors and experienced officials to identify areas for improvement.

2. Prioritize Education & Training

Earning a Junior National Certification requires a strong foundation in rules, mechanics, and professional officiating standards. I’ve been focused on continually educating myself to stay ahead in the game.

To stay on top of my game:

  • I make it a priority to attend USAV referee clinics and PAVO training sessions.
  • I keep up with rulebook updates and study real-game scenarios to understand how top-tier officials handle different situations.
  • I regularly watch game footage to learn from the best in the field and improve my skills.

3. Find Mentorship & Coaching

I’ve learned that one of the best ways to grow as an official is by learning from those who have already reached higher levels. Finding mentors has been incredibly helpful in navigating the certification process and improving my officiating skills.

  • I’ve connected with Junior National and National-level officials to gain insights and guidance.
  • I’ve asked for on-court feedback and post-match evaluations to continuously improve.
  • I’m actively involved with officiating organizations like Zebras of Northern Illinois, which has helped me expand my network and learn from others.

4. Officiate High-Profile Events

Gaining recognition and experience at major tournaments is essential to advancing in officiating. I’ve made it a point to get as much exposure as possible at regional and national events, which has helped strengthen my officiating portfolio.

  • I sign up for USAV and PAVO-sanctioned tournaments to keep challenging myself.
  • I apply for officiating positions at major regional and national competitions to gain more visibility.
  • I focus on showcasing professionalism and leadership to earn positive evaluations from assignors.

5. Strengthen Essential Skills

Beyond enforcing the rules, officiating at a higher level requires leadership, communication, and the ability to handle intense match environments. I’ve been honing several key skills to help me in high-pressure situations.

  • Conflict Resolution: I’ve worked on managing interactions with coaches and players calmly and professionally.
  • Game Management: I’m focused on controlling match flow and making consistent, confident calls.
  • Composure Under Pressure: Staying level-headed in high-stakes situations is critical, and I’ve been practicing maintaining my composure in tense moments.

Final Thoughts

The path to Junior National certification is all about gaining experience, refining skills, seeking mentorship, and officiating at higher-level events. It takes dedication and persistence, but with the right approach, I know advancing to the next level is absolutely within reach.

If this is the year to take that next step, now is the time to start preparing! What strategies have helped you grow as an official? I’d love to hear about your experience!
